The Deaf Education Hub

Established in 1996, our Deaf Education Hub has strong roots within the Rosanna Golf Links school community and aims to give children who are deaf or hard of hearing the best possible access to an inclusive mainstream education.

Sitting at the heart of our grounds, “The Hub” comprises of six withdrawal spaces, providing a quiet learning environment for our students. Within this space, we also aim to create a welcoming environment where every student feels comfortable to socialise with their friends. This may be through our weekly lunch time ‘Deaf Club’ run by our Deaf Hub School Captains, or during our morning sound checks where our teachers of the deaf ensure students are able to access sounds via the Ling Test and a quick equipment check.

How we work

A teacher sitting with two students at a table, engaging in a learning activity. The students are wearing matching red polo shirts, and one has a hearing aid. The teacher and students are smiling, using markers on the table. A laptop and educational materials are visible in the background.

At Rosanna Golf Links, we run a two teacher model for our deaf and hard of hearing students. This means that, where possible, our deaf/hard of hearing students from each year level are grouped together in one classroom and are assigned both a classroom teacher and teacher of the deaf. All of our teachers of the deaf are qualified teachers, many of whom also hold a Master of Learning Intervention or Master of Special Education and attend weekly planning with the rest of the teaching team. This collaborative approach to planning means curriculum can be adapted to suit the wide range of needs of our students.

Alongside a range of specialist assessments and resourcing, this approach enables an inclusive environment for all students to reach their full potential. Students are able to work flexibly between the classroom and the withdrawal space depending on their learning needs and preferences.
